Specialist Protective Coatings

Atmospheric and industrial pollution can cause substantial deterioration to reinforced concrete structures.

Chemical Damage:

Carbonation: Carbon dioxide gas penetrating the concrete surfaces will react with free lime converting into calcium carbonate ie. Carbonation. This has no detrimental effect on the concrete apart from reducing its alkalinity which passifies the steel bar corrosion. Once the ph of the concrete has fallen to less than approximately 9 the steel is no longer protected leading to reinforcement corrosion causing bursting stresses and subsequent spalling. Use of surface applied anti-carbonation coatings are ideal for extending the buildings life and improving the aesthetic appearances. Elastomeric crack bridging anti-carbonation coatings are also available..

Chloride Attack:

Chloride ions (salts) entering the concrete structure either as soluble salts particularly on highway structures or previously introduced within the concrete mix as an accelerator (calcium chloride) destroy the protective passive oxide layer around the steel bar. This destructive process will set up incipient anodes along the steel bar leading to electrochemical corrosion and spalling.

Use of surface applied corrosion inhibitors, usually amino alcohol based, have an affinity for the steel creating a protective layer to protect against further decay.

Physical Damage:

ie. Freeze-thaw action creating micro cracking of the concrete surface with subsequent spalling, thermal movement, or drying shrinkage lead to further damage and deterioration.

Lingard Ltd have many years experience understanding the physics of concrete deterioration and most cost effective, long-term solution for treating the concrete to improve the visual aspect and increase the life expectancy.

The selection of coatings is influenced by the nature of decay and future demands, physical/aesthetic considerations with a wide range of systems available ie. Silane impregnation, corrosion inhibitors, acrylic rigid or crack bridging coatings, polyurethane anti-graffiti coatings, fire reinforced resins, epoxy, p.u's etc.

Lingard Ltd are experienced with installing all major specialist coatings manufacturers systems including Sika, Weber, Fosroc, BASF, Remmers, Vandex.
